Mrs. Stevensonuring this time of year, many of us will be adorning our homes with Holiday Spirit through all sorts of decorations. At the communities of the New England Deaconess Association we do the same and our residents rejoice in the beauty of their surroundings. Of course, this wonderful sense of holiday cheer is more than skin deep. With this same level of enthusiasm we work to adorn the hearts and lives of our residents on a daily basis through individual attention and special care. This loving spirit is at the core of the "abundant life" concept which has long been a central part of the heritage of the New England Deaconess Association. In the spirit of this season, I hope you will join me in adding to the way the Deaconess Abundant Life Communities brings abundance to people's lives by making a special end-of-the year gift.

Campbells The sense of abundance that we focus on is different than what is often referred to in our society. As we enter the holiday season it is easy to think of what it feels like to be full or blessed with much. Here at New England Deaconess, we've found that abundance is less about over-indulgence or the accumulation of "stuff," and more about offering a vibrancy and vitality of life to people regardless of their age.

BerriesOne gift last year allowed us to install Companion Radio, which broadcasts four special radio channels customized with content that resonates with our older residents. One afternoon, an Alzheimer's affected resident enjoyed a broadcast of Mario Lanza performing an Italian opera from her youth. Though speech is becoming harder for her, her pleasure was unmistakable. And even though her financial resources have been exhausted, she continues to reside in the home where she experiences "abundant life."Scroll

PartyHalloween BabyMother Theresa once said, "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." On a moment by moment basis, one person at a time, the employees of the New England Deaconess Association do "small things with great love" that have a tremendous impact on the lives of the people we serve. Your commitment to these efforts enables this loving care to take place every day of the year.

Your gift always makes a difference in the lives of our residents! Through your generosity and support of the Deaconess Abundant Life Communities's end of year appeal, we are able to bring a cornucopia of caring service, amenities and activities, to the lives of our residents throughout the year.

This last year, among many things, your gifts helped us to:

  • Provide specialized staff training about giving "Alzheimers’ wise" care.
  • Sustain affordable apartments within our communities.
  • Continue to expand to meet growing needs.

We continue in the tradition of John Wesley who said,"do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."

Paul and JennyOur residents have taught us much about what abundant life is by how they have chosen to live. We are rebuilding our older campuses and constructing new communities to offer the housing and services that older adults today tell us they want. In the midst of your gift giving to the special people in your life, please consider Mrs. Coffey at the pianoa gift for the special people who find a home with us.

Your donation to the Deaconess Abundant Life Communities brings a special abundance to the lives of the older adults we serve, and I hope brings a sense of life's abundance to you as well.

With great appreciation and best wishes,

Rev. Herb Taylor, CEO
